History of Library: One of important aims and objective of Ghalib Institute, Aiwan-e-Ghalib was the establishment of a research library. A library within the Ghalib Institute’s campus was established in the year of 1971, named on fifth President of India (1974-1977) as “FAKHRUDDIN ALI AHMED RESEARCH LIBRARY”. With the addition of books and also in the case of scholars the library was shifted to large place on the first floor of the Ghalib Institute, is building which is equipped with the modern facilities. The library has special collection on Classical Literary Books, Rare Manuscripts and Documents about Ghalib and his an era: and general books for Urdu and Persian language and literature, Research and Academics, including some important rare and hand written books. The Library has also important Manuscripts also.

The library has gifted many fine books about Ghalib from Pakistan; a collection of important books from the collection of old trustees of Ghalib Institute, late Syed Muzaffar Husain Burney, Prof. Nazir Ahmed, Syeda Hamid Sultn Ahmed and recently Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed gifted a large number of document. Library has other collection also like: Kalidas Gupta Raza Collection, The Holy Qur’an Collection, Qazi Abdul Wadood Collection, Begum Abida Ahmad Collection, Professor Nazeer Ahmad Collection and Saeed Khan Collection. It is continue right now. The Library has old and most important journals collection like: Nigar, Nuqoosh etc.

The library continues to receive important magazines and journals not only from India but aboard also. The Library continues to receive the prestigious refered journals ‘Makhzan’ from ‘Qaid-e-Azam Library’, Lahore, Pakistan. Another famous magazine ‘Qaumi Zaban’ and other magazine is also regularly received along with ‘Takhleeq’. The other popular literary and well-known magazines, few of them are: ‘Tahzibul Akhlaq’, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, ‘Urdu Adab’, New Delhi, ‘Fikr-o-Tahqeeq’, New Delhi, ‘Urdu Duniya’, New Delhi, ‘Aiwan-e-Urdu’ Delhi’, ‘Mahnama Aajkal’, New Delhi, ‘Adab-o-Saqafat’, Hyderabad, ‘Rampur Raza Library Journal’ Rampur, ‘Tamseel-e-Nau’, Darbhanga, ‘Mahnama Insha’, Kolkata, ‘Naya Waraq’, literary Magazine, Mumbai, and ‘Span Magazine’ USA Embassy, New Delhi, India Today, The Week, Outlook and Frontline in English Language Magazines, New Delhi are also available in Library.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Research Library is a knowledge center and it has a very rich collection about Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib and his contemporaries, Urdu Classical Literature, Prose and Poetry. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Research library is a knowledge hub of specially on Ghalib. Another important thing about the library is that the “Computerized Cataloguing” of books are rapidly moving on.

Location: Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Research Library is located at New Delhi, Near Mata Sundri College for Womens (University of Delhi). It has 10 minutes walking distance from ITO Metro Station as well as 10 minutes walking distance from the Delhi Gate Metro Station. It has also same distance from the Barah Khamba Metro station.

History of Ghalib Institute: The idea of founding a fitting memorial to Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib was first mooted by a committee formed under patronage of Dr. Zakir Husain, late President of India to celebrate the Ghalib Centenary in 1969. Mrs. Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister was appointed the President and Mr. Fakhrudddin Ali Ahmed (also a former President of India) the secretary of the committee. As a result of the endeavors of this committee Ghalib Institute was established in 1971. It is now a well-known Institute, not only in India but also aboard, actively engaged in various academic and cultural fields, activiries and managed by a Trust of eminent people. The Institute’s building in its own premises known as Aiwan-e-Ghalib. It has an Official block, an Admin block, a Library named as “Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Research Library”, a Museum known as “Begum Abida Ahmed Ghalib Museum”, an Auditorium named “Ghalib Auditorium” and a Guest House also The Institute celebrated its Golden Jubilee Celebration in 2019.

Our International seminar is an annual function, which is usually organized every year in the month of December. We have also organized several seminars on some of Ghalib’s contemporaries-such as Bahadur Shah Zafar, Zauq, Momin, Dagh Dehlavi etc. Every year we also felicitate some eminent scholars for his life time contribution in the literary world. Ghalib Institute has always had the good fortune of having the support and association of scholars of the highest merit. The Institute’s Ghalib Awards, which are given in the spheres of Urdu Prose, Poetry, Criticism, Drama and eminent personalities for their Literary Services etc., are considered highly prestigious in Academic and Literary World.

Ghalib is popular not only amongst the researchers and academicians but also amongst the people at large. The Institute, therefore, has always had a two-pronged approaches in promoting Ghalib’s works in the literary spheres as well as in the cultural arena. The HumSub Drama group, which is a part of the Institute and was headed by Begum Abida Ahmed till her death, has been very active and it’s various plays well received by the people. We have also organized from time to time special programmes of musical presentation of Ghalib’s poetry by well-known singers of the sub-continent. Mushaira is also a regular annual feature in which all eminent Urdu poets are invited from the world and aboard also.

The Institute also publishes the well-known half yearly research journal “Ghalib Nama”. We have brought out a large number of research publications on Ghalib and his other eminent contemporaries. The library of the Institute contains rare manuscripts and important publications. Information technology has provided enormous facilities for research in all fields. We wish to benefit from it and equipping and growing facilities for our Library accordingly.
